An aircraft weighing over 500 tons touches the runway at a speed of more than 250 km/h. The impact load must be transferred from the aircraft to the landing gear tires through tapered roller bearings.In a fraction of a second, the wheels accelerate from zero to landing speed, with an acceleration that even the most advanced racing cars cannot achieve on the track — all after being exposed for several hours to temperatures below freezing at altitudes above 10,000 m.
The bearings are then heated within seconds to extremely high temperatures through the aircraft’s brake discs. The loads, accelerations and operating conditions are almost unimaginable.
